Foreign Travel - updated 15.02.2022
We are advised by NHSEI, BMA and RCGP that travel vaccinations remain a low clinical priority, set against the context of the wider pandemic NHS recovery, patient access, long term condition management and offering the Covid vaccination programme.
However we recognise that they remain important to our patients, so we protect a proportion of nurse time to deliver these every month.
We will endeavour to do what we can, but given the wider demands on our time which are clinically urgent, you may be advised that the time window for your vaccinations is inconvenient for your travel plans.
In this scenario if we have no availability to accommodate your needs, we will signpost you to local private travel providers, who may also be able to serve any additional needs for e.g. Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis; Meningitis vaccines; rabies; tuberculosis (TB) and yellow fever.
Routine medication can be given in a larger quantity for an extended trip (up to 3 months). If you are going abroad please contact us 2 months in advance to ensure your complete protection. Complete and hand in a Travel Form Questionnaire and make an initial Telephone Appointment with the Treatment Room nurse. Download the travel form (DOCX, 20KB), the form can also be collected from reception.
If travelling beyond local Europe you may be exposed to some health risks. These include, but are not limited to, infections that can be prevented by vaccinations and anti-malarial tablets, as well as a health aware lifestyle if in another environment. Please discuss this with your travel agent or ticket seller before booking. Further advice can be gained from www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk or www.masta-travel-health.com This last site may charge you for their advice.
When booking in for travel vaccines, please ensure you have your requirements in writing and bring with you to your appointment. There is often a decision to be made by the traveller on the basis of risk/benefit/cost and the options for one person may differ from another. Most vaccines are available at the surgery but they are not all provided on the NHS. For example, Hepatitis A vaccine is free on the NHS, rabies, yellow fever, Japanese Encephalitis and oral cholera vaccine are not. Please check at the time of making an appointment in case special vaccines need ordering. We do make a charge for anti-malarial prescriptions.
Infectious Diseases
In addition to childhood immunisation we offer vaccination for Rubella, Influenza, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
We cannot offer an Occupational Health Service and so if you are advised to have Hepatitis B because of your job role, this should be arranged for you by your employer with a Occupational Health provider.
Minor Surgery
Minor surgical procedures are performed by those clinicians who are trained and accredited. Make a normal appointment to see the doctor to discuss the problem and a further appointment will be made for the procedure to be carried out if appropriate.
Child Development and Vaccination
The clinicians are trained and experienced in child development and oversee an effective and safe immunisation and child development programme. We provide this service in co-ordination with our health visitors and the community clinics. Please ask for details at reception.
Antenatal Care
The health and progress of our mothers-to-be is monitored closely by our midwives and your doctor. The hospital specialist will see you as appropriate. The doctors offering this service have special accreditation from the Family Health Services Authority.
Practice Nurse Clinics
Practice nurse clinics cover a variety of services from wound dressings and ear syringing to the special services already mentioned. Please ask at reception.
Counselling
If we cannot help you directly we have access to a variety of outside resources. We can refer to an experienced Counselling Team. If you have a problem don’t be afraid to ask.
Healthy Living
The practice nurses run Healthy Living and Well Woman sessions covering all aspects of health care and prevention. The teaching of breast self-examination is part of our Well Woman Programme. Please ask for details at reception. Patients aged between 40 and 74 will be offered an appointment for a health check at some point.
Cervical Cancer Screening
We operate a smear recall system in conjunction with the health authority. Women between the ages of 25 and 64 years should check with reception that they are ‘up to date’, if not an appointment will be given. Smears can also be performed on request if appropriate.
